The First team finally got their league campaign up and running after several frustrating weeks of false starts, and the visitors to Carlton Park were Coplestonians Reserves.
Before the match both teams and spectators observed a minute silence in memory of Queen Elizabeth II.
Sax started the quickest and looked threatening from the kick off, and it was only a few minutes into the match when the ball fell to Ryan Everington just inside the box and he volleyed a superb strike past the keeper on the angle.
Sax continued to have the better of the play with some controlled passing football but could not immediately find the second goal. Cops then came more into the game and Will in goal (sponsored by D&M Driver (Suffolk) Ltd) had to make a couple of sharp saves.
At around the half hour mark Rob ran onto a loose ball, and from just outside the area rifled a left foot drive past the keeper to make it 2-0.
Just before half time Churchy (sponsored by SD Blowers Agriculture) saw a good shot pushed wide by the keeper, and the half ended 2-0.
Cops came out fired up in the second half and the match became a midfield battle with play broken up. The ref gave out a few yellow cards as tackles were flying in and the Sax defence held firm.
Slowly Sax began to take charge of the match again and created some more chances to make it 3-0 and firmly put the game to bed, but the third goal proved elusive and the match ended with a well deserved 2-0 victory.
In summary it was a very professional performance where we played some good football at times scoring two great goals to take control of the match. We also showed our battling qualities when needed and kept a clean sheet. Given the long wait for our first game this was an excellent start to the season.
The Reserves travelled to Samuels FC hoping to build on their opening game win. However it was not to be as they were beaten 5-1, with the goalscorer being Eddie (sponsored by M&R Cars).
Next week there will be no game at Carlton Park as the First team make the long trip to Bury St Edmunds to face Sporting 87 Reserves, whilst the Reserves travel to Bacton Utd 89 Reserves in the Cup.
