Match Report - Reserves - 4/11/23

The reserves hosted Somersham, one of the few games in the league that went ahead after the torrential rains - a testament to our excellent playing surface. With Somersham holding 2nd place in the league we expected a tough game but ended the day with heads held high.

The game started scrappy and the visitors found themselves ahead around 20 minutes in from a smart header. They soon doubled their lead with a fine freekick that left GK Brad Pinnion with no chance.

Saxmundham continued to fight and, shortly before half time, an excellent cross from Jake Malster (sponsored by Howes Tools Limited) reached the back post and was finished smartly by winger Lewis Gladwell (sponsored by Shaun's Auto Repairs).

After the break Somersham continued to push and, around ten minutes in, a long range shot was spilled into the net by Pinnion to make it 1-3. Saxmundham did not allow themselves to be dejected and restarted the game with a positive attitude, determined to get back into it. Not long after, some excellent pressing work by the forward line led to the ball falling to veteran striker Shane Gladwell (sponsored by Shaun's Auto Repairs) who spotted the 'keeper of his line and duly lobbed him for 2-3.

There was controversy around the 75th minute when Somersham celebrated a fourth goal following a goal-mouth scramble from a corner. A goal was awarded by the referee however, upon consulting the linesman, reversed his decision as the ball had not crossed the line.

Saxmundham continued to battle, showing incredible fight and determination, plus some promising periods of possession. Although the game finished 2-3, the performance and mentality shown by our players is something to carry into the rest of the season as we continue to improve.
