League action returned this month, although in some unusual circumstances. The first team travelled to Kirton Athletic in the season opener, all raring to go, only for a good pre-season campaign to unravel and return home with no points and no goals. Losing 3-0.
The reserves started their league campaign the same weekend making the short trip to Leiston FC ‘A’ with a bare 11. Losing 5-1. Our goal coming from Jordan Payne (Sponsored by the Railway Tavern).
The second week saw the firsts take the long trip to Cockfield, a place for mixed results in the past. We went 2-0 in the first 15 minutes from 2 out the box strikes by Connor Banks (Sponsored by Claba Creative), the hosts brought it back to 2-2 before Jack Ward-Wickins slotted home the 3rd from a tight angle, celebrating by falling to the floor with cramp. Backs against the wall defending with the hosts piling on the pressure saw a dubious penalty be given with 5 minutes to go. The Cockfield striker stepped up and cooly slotted it past Joe in goal. The game looked like it was going to finish up there, but after a foul given the Cockfield half for the Sax, we pushed players forward, Sean Taylor knocked the ball towards the back post, the ball pin-balled around before Will Stebbings (Sponsored by R&R Carpentry) took control and forced the ball into the back of the net for The Sax to snatch 3 points. Not a pretty performance, but we got the job done in the end.
The reserves unfortunately couldn’t raise a side that week due to illness, injury and holidays – Something we don’t want to make a habit of.
The reserves did have a game the following week – Taking the long trip to Bury Town F.C Rams. The boys put in a complete performance and returned with 3 points after a 5-0 scoreline. Goals from Aaron Church (Sponsored by the Railway Tavern), Dan Blowers, Charlie Felton, Sean Taylor & Aiden Midwinter.
October brings weekly fixtures for the first team, with a cup visit to Div One’s Stowupland Falcons, and finally our first home fixture on the 24th. The reserves continue their campaign on the 10th October, away to Bacton Utd ‘A’.
