Our reserves team visited Stowmarket Town FC only after 3 weeks from our home fixture where we won 4-0. It was clear to see that both sides had strengthened squads. Sax had called up 4 first team players to field a full 16 man squad for the first time this season. Saxmundham started as above with Henry M, Aidan N, Churchy, Eithan V and Will K on the bench.
Stowmarket started the stronger team in a very scrappy first half. Both teams had chances to go ahead but against the run of play Sax played the ball across field to the right to Aidan Midwinter to run in and chip the Stow keeper. Just before the half time break Stow equalised. Sax made 2 changes at the break by taking off Aidan M, pushed Harry out left and added Churchy into the middle of midfield. Also subed of Callum and pushed Barney back into right back position and added Henry M to wide right midfield. The second half started much the same as the first half although both teams looked more up for the game with some strong challenges.
Sax pushed hard and resulted in a corner with Jordy in the right place to smash the ball home 2-1. Just after that Harry got in from the left to slot home. Harry then pulled up with cramp. So a straight swap with Ethan on the left. Another good spell from Stow got them back to 3-2. Sadly the result of some poor refereeing saw Stow lose their heads and things started to flare up. However the last 20 minutes of the game was Saxmundham’s best part of the game by starting to pass the ball around. We then took Warren off playing a really steady first game this season for us. With a straight swap for Will K. Sax then scored their 4th with a great through ball for Ash to run on to and slot away. Soon after a strong across the box ball found Ethan at the back post to bang home.
We then decided to swap round the Midwinter brothers Henry off and Aidan back right midfield. Plus swapped out Ash for Aidan N up top. Almost straight away Aiden Midwinter picked up the ball deep into his own half and turned his marker with ease run wide right into stows half and delivered a great through ball on to Sharman toe. Who ran past the stow defenders and slotted it away. Definitly the best move of the game from Sax.
Final score 6 – 2 and a well deserved 3 points to push us up the table. Some good individual performances from Josh Roberts, Barney Bell, but Mom for his opening goal and the great assist to end the game is Aidan Midwinter. It was really good to have so many sax supporters there to encourage our boys!
